In days of old, there were advertisements promoting unhealthy healthy foods and remedies that would make us shudder with anger, feel overwhelming sadness or break out in unstoppable laughter if a marketer would attempt them today. Some examples…
From Domino Sugar in the 1950’s: Eating pure sugar is healthier than eating a grapefruit.
This one may bring tears: More Doctors smoke Camels than any other cigarette.
And traveling “pharmacists” would prescribe alcohol mixed with opium to cure nearly anything.
But we are more sophisticated today and would not fall for these things right?
Well here are 14 seemingly healthy foods that are probably not as healthy as you think.
#1 – Unhealthy Healthy Foods – Protein Bars
Walk into nearly any grocery store and you will find one rack dedicated to protein, energy and breakfast bars. Marketed as being full of healthy ingredients, a large percentage of these bars could easily fit into the candy bar rack when a person considers their nutritional value.
Am I saying all these bars are bad for you? No!
But I do suggest you read the ingredients to see just how much sugar and other “bad for you items” are listed. Remember that ingredients are listed in order of amount in the item. So if sugar or high fructose corn syrup is 1, 2 or 3 on the ingredient list, it is probably a candy bar disguised as a healthy breakfast or energy bar.
#2 – Unhealthy Healthy Foods – Flavored Waters
It is important that you drink plenty of water daily. But the thought process of buying those flavored waters could be defeating the purpose. In many cases, the flavoring has sweeteners such as sugar, fructose or even artificial sweeteners.
Some studies have linked artificial sweeteners to cardiovascular problems and we know sugar and fructose can be linked to weight gain. Not to mention, sugar can make you more thirsty.
Just drink the plain water.
#3 – Unhealthy Healthy Foods – Orange Juice
By no means am I saying orange juice is unhealthy. But what you need to understand is, it is more healthy to eat the fruit itself along with other fruits. Relying on just orange juice as your method of getting Vitamin C is not a correct attitude. You see, orange juice has ample amounts of sugar.
Occasional glasses of OJ are fine but don’t rely on it for your complete needs.
#4 – Unhealthy Healthy Foods – Gluten Free
Here is where marketing has confused many people.
If your Doctor has told you that you are Celiac, then you do probably need to stay clear of gluten. But what many people do not realize is, when manufacturers take the gluten out, something must take its place.
The normal replacement is more starches and sugars that are loaded with calories and have no nutritional benefits.
#5 – Unhealthy Healthy Foods – Frozen Veggie Patties
For those people who assume they are eating healthier by skipping the ground beef and heading to the frozen aisle to buy a bag of frozen veggie patties, you may have been “duped.”
Many of these pre-made and highly processed veggie patties are packed with fillers that are high in starches.
You should examine the ingredient list on these too. If vegetables are listed at the start of the ingredient list, you may have found a healthy pattie.
#6 – Unhealthy Healthy Foods – Drive Thru Smoothies
If you make your own smoothie at home, it is probably healthy. But many of the smoothies you can order at various drive-thrus (without mentioning brand names) start off healthy but to give you that “come back soon” feeling, the brand adds extra sugars and ice cream that adds tons of calories and negates the original nutritional value the smoothie was meant to provide you.
#7 – Unhealthy Healthy Foods – Dried Fruits
Fruit is a healthy snack! And if manufacturers would leave the fruit as is and dry it without adding sugars, it would be great!
But in a way to give people more and to have a better taste than the competition, manufacturers add more sugars that are not nutritious but are actually unhealthy.
Fruits have enough natural sugars that adding is bad for our health and waistline.
#8 – Unhealthy Healthy Foods – Fat-Free
Scientists have already shown that removing the fat from foods is not beneficial whatsoever. The problem is, taste goes away and manufacturers have to appeal to taste buds to sell that fat-free product.
The answer… Add carbohydrates. Add sugars.
Our bodies are designed to keep fit and trim by burning fat. But when there is an overload of carbohydrates, the body will burn it first and store the fat in areas that are quite noticeable.
We recommend staying clear of fat-free foods. You are already probably getting more carbohydrates than you need as it is.
Because of that, iGalen experts developed Emulin:
EMULIN® is the world’s first “carbohydrate manager.” The active ingredients in EMULIN® help your body overcome the negative effects of carbs in natural and holistic ways.

#9 – Unhealthy Healthy Foods – Packaged Sandwich Meats
Sure, they have needed protein, but packaged ham, turkey and other sliced, packaged meats also have many additives that are not good for you. They load these meats with salt and preservatives so they can keep for longer periods.
It is actually better to just buy the meat and slice it yourself for sandwiches.
#10 – Unhealthy Healthy Foods – Bran Muffins
The word bran has been associated with good digestive health. And rightfully so, if all you are eating is the bran. But when you purchase the majority of bran muffins in stores, you may get just as much value from a doughnut.
These packaged bran muffins have calories upon calories because of the high sugar content that completely defeats the purpose of the low amount of bran in them.
#11 – Unhealthy Healthy Foods – Frozen Yogurt
The probiotics in yogurt are great for our health, but when you see that “costly” frozen yogurt shop on the side of the road, don’t assume you are getting the same thing as regular yogurt you can buy at health food stores.
Frozen yogurt is closer to regular ice cream than it is yogurt. Sugars are added and let’s not mention all those fattening toppings displayed in front to add to the top of that frozen concoction.
#12 – Unhealthy Healthy Foods – Rice Cakes
There was a huge weight loss fad some time back that had people living on these air-filled rice cakes. But the weight did not go away.
They seem like they should be healthy but rice cakes are not healthy. They are loaded with sodium, have no nutritional value and they are packed full of carbohydrates. It is said that 1 rice cake is 80% carbohydrates.
#13 – Unhealthy Healthy Foods – Pretzels
These snack item may seem perfect, but they are far from it.
Pretzels are very high in sodium content and they have no nutritional value at all.
You are better off snacking on a hand full of nuts instead. At least you will feel some satisfaction as pretzels still leave you feeling hungry and also thirsty because of the salt content.
#14 – Unhealthy Healthy Foods – Energy Drinks
It’s been well documented that many energy drinks are bad for you in many ways. A little caffeine is fine, but many of these give more caffeine than a whole pot of coffee. Plus the sugar content is normally higher than a bottle of soda.
Some companies have developed safer energy drinks with less sugar and B Vitamins. Check the ingredient list if you feel you must get some energy from a can.
What is the most important take away from today’s post?
Read the labels!
Just because the packaging says it is healthy does not mean it is so. Government agencies have tried to put controls, but there are always “loopholes.” Just because it says healthy means it may be healthy in one way but bad for you in more than 1 other way.
