It is not a conspiracy nor a theory—climate change is a fact; we are witnessing the effects on a daily basis.
Who is to blame?
Blaming is not the answer to solving, but, if we really must know, we humans have been the biggest culprit.
Here at iGalen, we are not interested in getting political. Our goal is to help humans live a healthy and happy life. However, we must address the issue of climate change to help our brothers and sisters understand what each of us can do to ensure our children have the health and well-being they deserve.
So, in this post, we will look at 15 ways we can all battle climate change. The plain truth is that we all have ways we can help. We need a team effort, and we believe that this post will cause positive changes in the way we act and react as we battle global warming and climate change.
Before we share these ways you can help, let’s look at:
Climate Change Facts & Stats
Global temperatures must be kept below a maximum rise of 2 degrees Celsius, according to experts. To reach this goal, greenhouse gas emissions must be lowered 45% by the year 2030.
Global warming of 2-3°C is estimated to increase the number of people at risk of malaria by up to 5% globally, or more than 150 million people.
Sweden is the country making the biggest strides towards climate protection.
The country with the highest rate of greenhouse gas emissions is China.
A 6% decline in global wheat yields and a 10% decline in rice yields is expected for each additional 1°C rise in global temperature, with substantial impacts on nutrition and development in poor regions.
The frequency of weather-related disasters has increased by 46% from 2007 to 2016 (compared to the 1990s) due to climate change.
There are many facts and stats, but, instead of focusing on the negatives, we will focus on how we can all work together to solve these issues.
15 Ways We Can Help
The way to help starts right at home. Let’s be the catalyst for stopping climate change.
Battle Climate Change #1: Voice It
Just as you are reading this blog post, you can also be a voice in the ears of others. Share what you learn and help educate other people about the dangers of climate change.
One great way you can help is to share this post with all family and friends on social media.
Many people have no idea just how important the battle against climate change is. Help them realize with your voice.
Battle Climate Change #2: Replace Your Light Bulbs
By replacing all regular (incandescent) light bulbs in your home with the newer CFL bulbs, you are cutting energy consumption from lighting by approximately 70%. Plus, the CFL bulbs have a longer life!
Battle Climate Change #3: Find Ways To Not Start Or Use The Car As Much
Transportation by fuel burning vehicles is responsible for a high percentage of the pollution and climate warming emissions in the world. Here are various ways each of us can cut this percentage down:
- Use public transportation.
- Ride a bicycle.
- Use a ride sharing system.
- Consider buying an electric or hybrid vehicle.
- Try to fly less.
Battle Climate Change #4: Recycle
Recycling is a key component in the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. Much of our household trash is recyclable, so consider responsibly disposing of paper, plastic, and aluminum at your local recycling facilities. In fact, many cities and communities already offer recycling programs as part of their routine trash pickup. If yours doesn’t, consider using Tip #1 and voice your opinion about recycling!
Battle Climate Change #5: Support Companies That Use Recycled Materials
By supporting companies that use recycled materials, such as plastic, glass, etc., you are helping them keep striving forward using a system that will help future generations.
In most cases, the company’s packaging will tell you if they use recycled materials.
Battle Climate Change #6: Call For And Support The Transition To Renewable Energy
Energy sources that are cleaner and healthier should be a priority, such as:
- water, etc.
If possible, you may want to consider transitioning your home to one or more of these energy sources.
If we can influence our leaders to also adopt renewable energy over the coal, gas, and other climate-damaging sources, we will be helping to make a cleaner and healthier Earth for the coming generations.
Battle Climate Change #7: Your Refrigerator And Air Conditioning
For many years, refrigerators and air conditioners have run on hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), an extremely damaging gas compound.
While many developed countries have been phasing out these types of refrigerators and air conditioners, many underdeveloped countries are still using them. Even more alarming, people in the United States could still be using them without their knowledge.
Check your systems. Perhaps it’s time to change.
Battle Climate Change #8: Plant & Grow
As a society, we are often unaware of just how much our behavior affects everything else. Although our ignorance is a huge flaw, it’s remarkable to note how our conscious behavior can cause positive change.
Plants and trees “inhale” carbon dioxide (what we exhale) and “exhale” oxygen (what we inhale). It’s a no-brainer; more trees equals better, cleaner air.
So plant some trees, grow a garden, and add some color to your property with plants. Not only will they add beauty and value, they are helping slow the rate of greenhouse gases that are damaging the air and climate.
Battle Climate Change #9: Weatherize Your Home
If our homes have drafts or are not properly insulated, we are using more energy. This, in turn, heats the Earth and is a major contributor to climate change.
We suggest you seal up all drafts around windows and doors; you should also make sure you have the proper amount of insulation.
By weatherizing your home, you are doing another great part in the battle against climate change. Plus, you will save money on heating and cooling bills.
Battle Climate Change #10: Cut Down On Hot Water Usage
Every time your hot water heater turns on, you are using energy. Unless you are on wind or solar power, that energy is generating emissions that are heating the planet because energy must be used to create more energy.
Try washing clothes in cold water and take less showers. By cutting down on hot water usage, you are saving energy and helping the planet.
Battle Climate Change #11: Stay Clear Of Investing In Companies Who Are On The Other Side
Do you know where your pension funds are investing? Are you familiar with the companies you have stocks in?
If we continue supporting companies that are adamant about using fossil fuels, we are essentially helping them destroy our planet when we invest in them.
It is better to support those who support climate change initiatives than those who ignore.
Battle Climate Change #12: Have A Properly Maintained Vehicle
Just consider this fact: every gallon of gas you save keeps 20 pounds of carbon dioxide from reaching the atmosphere.
By keeping your car properly tuned and with correct tire pressure, you are doing what you can to ensure good gas mileage when commuting, which will help save the atmosphere as well as save you money.
Battle Climate Change #13: Buy Energy Saving Appliances
When it’s time to purchase new appliances, look for ones that have the Energy Star logo. The less energy used, the more money you can save on electric bills, and the less harm done on the environment. It’s a win-win! So when you purchase appliances, check their Energy Star rating.
Battle Climate Change #14: Reduce Water Usage
The less water we use, the more we are helping the environment. The process of treating and pumping water to homes requires energy which also heats the climate.
Those little things you can do like:
- turning off the water while lathering during a shower,
- fixing any drips or leaks,
- and using water saving fixtures like toilets.
All of these small things will help cut down on the issues of climate change.
Battle Climate Change #15: Use A Clothesline
Dryers are electricity hogs.
As stated before, it takes energy to make energy, and most of it is made using fossil fuels like coal.
Instead of using the dryer, hang your freshly-washed clothing on a clothesline on those sunny, windy days. They will dry quickly, and you will be doing your part to battle climate change.
