- The smiles and laughter
- Swing rides
- Disneyland or a simple carnival
- Their looks and response in the zoo
- and that innocent face when their head is on the pillow, and they are fast asleep.
Yes, even when they frustrate us, we know that children are the future of humanity.
We want the very best for our children and “the best” should start with their health and well-being. But in this fast-moving world, we can sometimes neglect to teach our children important “stuff” they will need to survive in a world that resources are depleted in.
We need to instill great health practices in children.
But you are not a parent?
I am a firm believer in a long time saying… It takes a village to raise a child!
There are children around you everywhere. They look at you and learn from you. Just think about it!
Today, I am going to share 12 tips for instilling great health practices in children. And even if you don’t think you will be in a position to teach a child these, read them for yourself. Share them with others… Because you and I are a part of that village that are raising future generations.
Instilling Great Health Practices #1: Have A Talk With Their Physician
As the parent or grandparent, you talk with the child’s doctor on an occasional basis. Just ask the physician if they can have a talk with the child and explain why it is essential they stay physically active. Most children look up to, and respect doctors and will listen to what they have to say.
Instilling Great Health Practices #2: Be A Role Model
It’s not necessarily what you say; it is what you do.
Just make sure you follow a healthy diet and get plenty of exercises. Children watch what we do and imitate us. So, if we practice healthy living, they will do the same.
Instilling Great Health Practices #3: Promote Daily Physical Activity
Before televisions and computers, children were always active outside.
- Hide and Seek
- Red Rover
But while technology has its advantages, it also has made many children live lives that are unhealthy.
So, people, it is up to us to enliven the active days again! Turn the TV off. Put the computer to sleep and go out and play some activities with the children.
Promote physical activity on a daily basis. Your child will be glad you did in the long run.
Instilling Great Health Practices #4: A Healthy Breakfast Every Day
Here is another area that has gone by the wayside as people are living extremely busy lives. It may seem easier just pouring a bowl of that sugar-filled cereal for the child, but will easily help them when they are 20 and 100 pounds overweight?
It really does not take that much time to make a healthy breakfast.
Consider the future of the child instead of just focusing on the present situation.
Instilling Great Health Practices #5: Grow Your Own
No matter where you are, you CAN grow some edibles. And believe me, children love gardening. And most of all, showing them you can eat what you grow seems to make that food even more delicious.
Grow them and let the children eat these wonderful garden creations. And you are teaching them to eat healthily and also how to survive in difficult times.
Instilling Great Health Practices #6: Talk About Good Health
Preaching at children usually comes out bad, but if you casually talk about good health choices, they will listen. And do allow them to have their opinion.“I love walking because it makes me feel better. Plus, the doctor says it is good for our heart.”“I only eat just a little bit of candy, and when I do, I always eat something good for me, like carrots to help offset the sugar.”When the child is eating something good for them: “Great choice, I like that too!”
Instilling Great Health Practices #7: Get Children Involved In The Preparation And Cooking Of Food
Similar to #5, by getting the child involved in preparing and cooking healthy food choices, they will gain a love for cooking and you also have the opportunity to explain why you make such healthy foods. What it does for them in the future.
And, you are also teaching the child how to live more independently and be able to bypass those unhealthy drive-through windows and cook healthy meals at home.
Instilling Great Health Practices #8: Take Children Grocery Shopping With You
But it is more than just putting the child in the shopping cart… When you are examining foods, read the labels and tell your child what is in the food. Tell them why or why you won’t buy the item. Ask their opinion and explain why you shop the way you do.
Remember, children are learning. You may think they didn’t get the message but in many cases, they did, and it will come out when it needs to.
I won’t share my age, but I will say that in the eyes of many, I am old. And I still remember what my parents would say to me in times like these… And trust me, I do not run with eating utensils because that is one thing that was heavily instilled in me… Yes, it is a taught health practice. We don’t want to fall and poke an eye out.
Instilling Great Health Practices #9: Find And Provide A Safe Environment
In days of old, crimes against children were not as prevalent as they are in this era. For this reason, many parents have given way to inactivity in the name of safety.
But no matter where you are, there are safe zones where children can get the physical activity they need. It is up to you to take the time and find those safe zones.
It could be a park, gym, YMCA or some other similar choice. Just make the time to find a safe zone for that child’s physical health.
Instilling Great Health Practices #10: Stay On The Positive Side
Here is an area that many people need to learn… When a child approaches you and says, “I want to learn how to parachute from a plane,” or “I would like to climb Mount Everest,” do you respond positively or negatively?
“You shouldn’t try that, it’s dangerous,”
“I believe you can with the right training.”
Children need to hear and see positive responses to any dream or thought they have that is geared toward good health… Even if it doesn’t fit your mold.
Instilling Great Health Practices #11: H2O
Instead of that soda pop or other drink, drink water with the child. Carry extra H2O with you and offer it instead of offering to buy the sugar filled, unhealthy alternative.
And explain to the child why it is important to drink plenty of water daily.
Instilling Great Health Practices #12: Keep Healthy Snacks Always Available
Kids love to snack, so instead of cookies, crackers or candy bars, have seeds, nuts, fruit or vegetables. Once children develop a habit of snacking on healthy items, they will not desire the unhealthy items.
And I must mention that chocolate itself is not unhealthy. Dark chocolate can actually be good for you. It is just all the sugars and additives that are injected into candy bars. I suggest you look for raw chocolate that is naturally sweetened.
You will love it too!
