We all know of those various things that are obviously damaging to people’s health…
- Too much alcohol
But there are other things that are not as obvious and can be detrimental to a person’s health and well being.
While you may see some that you know are not healthy, some people were raised in a different time, place or way that they did not learn.
I mentioned smoking earlier. There was a day that smoking tobacco was considered safe. Now many years later, many of the people who were raised in that environment are addicted to nicotine and have no desire to go through the quitting process. But as we educate these people more and more about the bad effects of tobacco, they are starting to see the light and throw those “cancer sticks” into the trash.
But enough about that bad habit… Let’s talk about other things people are doing that could be damaging their health.
Only through education can we open the eyes and help people see ways to live longer and fuller lives.
Here are 12 things people do daily that may be damaging their health.
“The doctor of the future will give no medicines, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the causes and prevention of disease.” Thomas Edison
Damaging Their Health #1: Sitting For Long Periods Of Time
This is a difficult position as many people have careers that call for them to sit. But experts have discovered that people who sit for their work have a higher risk of heart disease and/or cancer.
It has even been verified that the person who does not exercise but stands to work has fewer odds of getting these health issues. If you do have a sit-down career, I suggest you consider a “standing desk.” And do be sure to get up consistently and move.
Damaging Their Health #2: Going Gluten Free
There are basically 2 reasons why a person should eliminate gluten from their diet:
- They have celiac disease which is very rare
- Or they are allergic to wheat
But if you do not have either of those conditions, cutting gluten from your diet can actually be bad for your health.
Many gluten-free foods are higher in sugars and many of the nutrients have been depleted getting the gluten out. That can be especially bad in children.
Damaging Their Health #3: Chewing Your Nails
This should be obvious, but daily we see people gnawing away at their fingernails. In most cases, it is anxiety, tension, and stress.
But if you consider everything you touch with your hands and fingers, you would probably get nauseated with the ideas of what you are putting into your body.
The bacteria that can grow under your fingernails can be immense. Maybe a stick of gum would be better.
Damaging Their Health #4: Sleeping Too Little Or Too Much
Studies have found that 7 to 9 hours of sleep is optimal. Sleeping less or more has been linked to things like
- heart disease
- and more
And it is also important that you have a good sleep environment. Invest in a good mattress and pillow. And make sure there are little noise and light.
Plus, if you create a consistent sleep pattern, everything will be easier.
“Health is the first muse, and sleep is the condition to produce it.” Emerson
Damaging Their Health #5: Wearing Tight Jeans
They call them skinny jeans, and while they may help you look skinny, they can damage a nerve in your legs that can cause a condition called meralgia paraesthetica that is painful.
I suggest you buy jeans that fit and leave the skinny jeans on the shelf.
Damaging Their Health #6: Using Non-Stick Cookware
When pans first came out with what seemed a wonderful invention called Teflon, women all around the world were elated. After all, cleaning stuck on foods can be tedious and frustrating. But it has been determined that when the polytetrafluoroethylene that makes Teflon slippery so items won’t stick becomes heated, it produces a toxic gas that has been linked to health issues such as reproduction problems.
Easy does not always equal safe.
Stainless steel or cast iron skillets are still the safest.
Damaging Their Health #7: Wearing A Tie Too Tight
The temptation to have that tie pulled tight and crisp can actually be bad for your health.
A study was performed that showed when men pulled their ties too tight, it put pressure on their intraocular system. This actually is the primary cause of glaucoma.
So loosen that tie a bit… You still look great!
Damaging Their Health #8: Too Much Time On Your Smartphone
I don’t know how many times I have witnessed a person staring at their smartphone while crossing a busy street. That could damage your health severely.
This should be common sense, but some people do not know that too much smartphone use can damage your health in other ways.
It can cause sleeplessness if used too late in the evening. Studies suggest the blue light can stop the human brain from producing melatonin which helps us sleep.
Studies have also found that many people who are addicted to their smartphones have a “screwed up” emotional balance because their brains produce too much gamma-aminobutyric acid.
It is also believed that too much smartphone use, can lead to terrible vision and even blindness.
“When health is absent, wisdom cannot reveal itself, art cannot manifest, strength cannot fight, wealth becomes useless, and intelligence cannot be applied.” Herophilus
Damaging Their Health #9: Just Waking Up And Going For A Jog
Jogging is great exercise! But when people just jump out of bed, put on their jogging gear and hit the trail, they are prone to injury.
It is recommended that you take 5 to 10 minutes to stretch your muscles first. This will ensure they are ready and limber to handle your jog.
Damaging Their Health #10: More Than 2 Alcohol Drinks Per Day
While a drink is not a terrible thing, more than 2 drinks per day can be bad for your health.
Experts agree that overdoing it with alcohol can lead to a higher risk of cancer of the mouth and throat. It also can create cirrhosis of the liver and high blood pressure. Not to mention, too much alcohol can help lead to obesity.
Damaging Their Health #11: Public Restroom Bacteria
It is quite natural after using any restroom to wash your hands… Especially public restrooms!
But using the soap dispenser and those handy hand dryers could be giving more germs than you are taking away from washing.
Studies have found that those soap dispensers are crawling with harmful bacteria and those hand dryers also spray out nasty germs.
Our suggestion is: carry your own hand soap and use the paper towels to dry.
Damaging Their Health #12: Your Language
It may seem like an odd thing to add to this list but many people are damaging their well being with the words they use…
There are so many toxic, negative words used by people on a daily basis and it creates an atmosphere of an unhealthy life.
Start thinking about the words you use daily. Are they full of negatives? Speaking positives and giving yourself daily affirmations will relieve so much of the stress, tension, and anxiety in your life.
